Sunflower Schedule for “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Kids”
Be Proactive – Jan. 4-19
This habit is about making choices and taking responsibility for your own actions. Think of a Stoplight when faced with a frustrating situation Stop, Think, Go! Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very, Bad Day does a nice job of illustrating how choices impact our days and our lives, this might be a fun book to read or a show to watch.
Begin with the End in Mind – Jan. 22- Feb. 2
This is the habit of vision or having a plan. This is a great time to talk about the old Fable “The Tortoise and the Hare” or even make a family mission statement. Ask your child about some of their goals they have set at school.
Put First Things First – Feb. 5-16
This habit focuses on self-management and taking care of important things first. “The Little Red Hen” does a lovely job of describing this habit. This would be a great time to talk about what needs to come first in your home.
Think Win Win – Feb. 20 – Mar. 2
This habit helps kids think about finding the mutually agreeable resolve when a problem arises. This asks them to think “it’s not all about me, and it’s not all about you.” This would be a fun time to talk about thinking Win-Win when it comes to sibling interactions or playground scenarios, ask your child when they have been in a situation when they did think Win-Win.
Seek First To Understand; Then to be Understood – Mar. 5-15
This habit teaches students to be empathetic listeners, and to listen with their whole body and heart and not just their ears. This might be a fun time for your student to become the teacher, allow them to show you what empathetic listening looks like. If you would like some discussion starters here is a link to some fun ones; http://www.ahaparenting.com/parenting-tools/communication/family-discussions.
Synergize – Mar. 26 – Apr. 6
What a fun way to say TEAMWORK! This habit reminds us that we can do so much more when we work together. What a great time to attack a big project around your house or work together to complete a fun craft!
Sharpen the Saw – Apr. 9-20
This habit reminds us to focus on body, mind, heart and soul. This is a great time for a family picnic, take a yoga class, or to share with your child how you sharpen your saw.
